Pitalkhora is a wonderful place, which has a remarkable series of caves with picturesque wild setting and perfectly calm atmosphere. These caves are situated about 80 kms to the northwest of Aurangabad in a village called Bharmarwadi.

There are thirteen caves, set high up on the hill, overlooking picturesque ravines having carvings and paintings that date from the 1st century B.C. to the 5th century A.D.

The caves are divided into two groups. Caves 1-9 face north and east and come in Group I. These caves are adjacent to each other. Rest caves face southwards and make up Group II.

Getting there:
Pitalkhora is 78 kms from Ajanta and can be visited by car, but the climb up the hill has to be done on foot.

You can either take a bus that takes you to the foothills of the Satamala, where the caves are located or hitch a ride on with a local to a village shrine called Patna Devi.
Preferable time of the year:
I suggest to you to visit this place during mid-winters. During this time the place green and flooded with flora.

We all have seen many caves but the caves in Pitalkhora are of much interest. If you want to know the answer, you will have to visit the place and feel the difference.
