Goa – all set to have a blast with the Shigmo Festival

Goa – the getaway holiday destination in India that is frequented by a large number of domestic and international tourists is all set to have a big blast with the Shigmo festival which begins on Saturday the 10 th of March 2007. Shigmo festival is celebrated all over Goa with great pomp and glory more so in the main cities of Panaji, Mapusa , Vasco-da-Gama and Margao. Shigmo is a festival of the masses and commemorates the end of winter and the beginning of the lovely spring season. It is celebrated in March – Phalguna or the last month of the Hindu calendar. The festival begins on the 11th day of the month and goes on till the full moon day. There are a number of cultural and entertainment programs that keep the crowd totally mesmerized. The fifth day is the big day called ‘Rang Panchami’ when people greet each other with the traditional ‘gulal’ or the red colour. A post harvest festival , Shigmo receives participation from all sectors of the society irrespective of caste, creed and religion. The festivities here start with Holi. The celebrations of the Shigmo festival begin with a colorful carnival which is a treat to the eyes. The carnival this year would include tableaux depicting folk dances, fancy dress , Romta Mell, Zanz pathaks and Lezim pathaks. It is going to be a mega song and dance bonanza with a huge number of tourists coming to Goa to witness this wonderful festival which is a reflection of Goa’s history and culture.
