The magic of this area has been the
greatest draw for international tourists. Kerala has been most popular as the Indian destination for ayurveda and yoga.It has beautiful temples and amazing beaches. Its most likeable aspect are boat rides along the backwaters. Susan Kurosawa shares her enjoyable experience.

Boats: The boats are called is kettuvallom (literally, boat with knots) and the small working models are still moved with bamboo poles .Boats set out from Kumarakom or Alappuzha (formerly Alleppey), mostly on trips of two or three days. The palm-fringed, tranquil backwaters were once just the state’s trade highways. The boats have been used for centuries to transport rice, coconuts and spices from the paddies and plantations along this 900km backwater maze of navigable lakes, canals, lagoons and rivers that tip into the Arabian Sea.
Coconut: The coir workers present an interesting sight as they soak coconut fiber in pools, beat them and wind the strands on long spindles stretched between an endless lines of coconut trees.Coconut is also used for its water, a refreshing natural drink and the inner white is eaten as well.
Cuisine: Food on the boats is the freshest you could hope for. Fresh tiger prawns bought and cooked, fresh veggies from farms enroute.
Sights: This 3 day ride can give you a glimpse into the Indian life. Children playing cricket.People giving abulations and the everyday sights that give the insight into a culture
