For the last three years, we have been projecting India as a next tourism hub for oversees travels but have completely failed to elevate its basic infrastructure to meet international standards of hospitality, a report said.
Pacific Asia Travel Association’s, (PATA), detailed report of 308-pages shows the inadequacy of hotel rooms, shortage of airports, poor security measures for tourists and lack basic infrastructure.
Seeking reforms in various sectors, the report also suggests seven plans to uplift the tourism sector, which consists of changes in aviation policy, taxation regime, human resource development in the hospitality sector, and the reforms needed in visa procedures.
In addition, the report has also expressed its concerns about the bureaucratic set-up in the country, which is hampering India’s expected boost in tourism.
However, the report also highlights brighter side of Indian tourism. The domestic Indian tourism has grown upto 13 per cent in 2005, while outbound trips by Indian residents have raised about 8.3 million in 2006.
