The famous ooty lake - located at the heart of the picturesque hill station is an artificial lake which was created in the year 1823-25.It stretches over an area of 65 acres and is about 2.5 kms in length. The credit for this beautiful lake goes to the Father of Ooty (who was then the Collector of Coimbatore) John Sullivan.

The lake and its surrounding areas have come about to be a major tourist area which is bustling with activity throughout the day. There is a boat house here which is maintained by the TTDC (Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation) .From here one can take boats of varying types on hire and enjoy a splendid boat ride on the pristine waters. There are also a number of shops in the area which sell refreshments, beautiful sweaters & shawls and home made chocolates of different flavours. The nursery here is a must visit for all those interested in picking up some lovely ornamental plants, seeds and bonsais for their home.
The area around the lake is also beautifully maintained with a footpath which one can use for a walk all along the lake. The walk is a truly refreshing experience with Mother Nature providing the perfect backdrop. There are pony rides available near the lake. For the children the garden and the toy train here are a delightful experience.
There are a number of beautiful hotels near the lake which have very well appointed rooms and service to match the unparalleled scenic beauty. The place is definitely any holidayers dream come true.
