There seems to be a shortage of hotels in India’s metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore . The shortage of hotels is especially in the mid-range hotel category. This is because of not only the soaring urban land prices but also due to the increased international business traffic as well as the increasing numbers of newly affluent Indian tourists.

Sheraton, Hilton and Holiday Inn are already here, and Four Seasons, Accor and Pan Pacific say they will be coming. But most of them will be hotels for the richer category.

Lalit Suri, the chairman and managing director of India’s Bharat Hotels says:

immediately needs another 100,000 rooms

This would require an investment of $17.4 billion. Most investments on way are for luxury hotels. If this continues the situation will be very bad around Commonwealth Games in 2010 and the cricket World Cup in 2011.

Though in India materials and labor remain extremely cheap but land prices in India’s cities are skyrocketing. Even as the countries economy has grown by 8 percent a year the hotel industry is lagging far behind.
So if you are planning a visit anywhere in India it would be best to book in advance.
